Why Does Motor Temperature Matter?

Why Does Motor Temperature Matter?

All electric motors generate heat as a part of their function. While this heat is a necessary part of how an electric motor works, it can also cause damage to the internal workings of a motor itself, causing overheating and burnout. According to Worldwide Electric Corporation, "An ambient operating temperature range of -20° C to 40° C is most common for general purpose industrial motors. This temperature range is consistent with most common industrial applications. Applications where ambient temperatures exceed 40° C need special consideration for components like the seals, fan, insulation and the grease in the bearings."

The Impact of Temperature

Temperature has a big impact on the efficiency and lifespan of a motor. Any standard motor that withholds a high temperature for any significant period of time will eventually result in a burn out. The higher the temperature, the faster this will occur. According to industry experts, "There is a rule of thumb that says a 10-degree Celsius (18-degree Fahrenheit) rise reduces the insulation's useful life by half, while a 10° C (18° F) decrease doubles the insulation's life. This implies that if you can keep a motor cool enough, the winding will last forever."

While we aren't saying that Maxeff motors will last forever, our motors are designed to consistently run cooler than standard AC motors. On average, standard AC motors run at 40°C, whereas Maxeff motors are designed to run almost 10°C cooler- with an average operating temperature of 30°C. The cooler internal temperatures of the Maxeff mean the motors can last longer and avoid burnout. These cooler internal temperatures can also help protect motors in high-temperature manufacturing situations for industries like steel and iron.

Maxeff Motor Temperatures

With Maxeff technology, motors run cooler and consequently longer than traditional AC motors. This means our motors not only last longer than traditional AC motors, but also save money on energy costs by being 99% efficient. Facilities that switch even one motor on their circuit to Maxeff technology not only eliminate their waste fees, but also generate additional power that can be used by non-Maxeff motors on the grid. When you pair the energy savings with the fact that temperatures are also reduced, it's easy to see why we think Maxeff is pretty cool.
